As temperatures drop, knitwear becomes the anchor of our wardrobe: layered, versatile, soft, and styled effortlessly from workdays to weekends. But not all knits are created equal. Understanding weave, weight, and fiber makes all the difference in comfort, appearance, and longevity.

Below, is a break down of the types of knits to look for this fall plus how to choose the right one for your lifestyle, occasions, and how to properly care for them so your sweaters stay luxe, not pilled.

FABRIC BASICS

Cashmere

  • Feel: Ultra-soft, light, warm without bulk.

  • When to wear: Everyday elevated dressing, workwear layers, travel.

  • Notes: Quality varies. Grade A cashmere feels soft, not fuzzy.

  • Itchy? No, if it’s itchy, it’s low grade or blended with synthetics.

Wool

  • Feel: Warm and structured.

  • When to wear: Cold climates, blazers, coats, or chunky knit sweaters.

  • Itchy? Sometimes. Look for Merino wool for a smooth, non-itch finish.

Wool Blends

  • Why they matter: Blends lighten weight, add stretch, and reduce itch.

  • Good blends: Wool + cotton, wool + modal, wool + cashmere.

Cotton & Cotton Blends

  • Feel: Breathable, soft, great for layering in fluctuating temps.

  • Best for: Office environments and early fall transitions.

Keeping Your Knits Beautiful:

  • Hand wash in cold or use delicate cycle with a wool/silk detergent.

  • Never use hot water.

  • Lay flat to dry, do not hang (it will stretch).

Reviving:

  • Invest in a sweater stone or fabric comb.

  • Gently remove pilling (common in high-friction areas).

  • Steaming restores shape and freshness.

Storage:

  • Fold—never hang.
